a quick lesson on the placenta

Your placenta is kind of a big deal—grown by your body, for your baby, and yes, also for you. Through gentle preparation whether in capsule or tincture form, The Folk Doula honor it as a source of nourishment, restoration, and magic.

Wait… you do what with the placenta???

The placenta is a remarkable organ—grown by your body, with care and precision, to sustain your baby. After birth, many cultures have honored the placenta as a powerful source of continued healing. Encapsulating or tincturing your placenta allows you to receive that medicine back into your own body during a time of great transition.

Though modern research is ongoing, many parents report benefits such as:

  • Reduced postpartum fatigue

  • Emotional stability and hormone regulation

  • Increased milk production

  • Replenished iron and essential nutrients

  • A sense of energetic grounding

While placenta encapsulation is not a replacement for professional medical care, it can be a beautiful addition to your personal postpartum plan.

Across time and continents, the placenta has been honored as more than medical waste—it has been treated as sacred.

There are many culturally significant utilizations for the placenta after birth. With the intention of personal connection and cultural sensitivity, I draw from my own ancestry in my practice.

In Polish and Slavic traditions, the placenta was often buried beneath a tree, believed to protect the child’s soul and link it to the land.

In Irish and Celtic folklore, the placenta was considered part of the “veil” between worlds—a portal of protection and magic.

Today, placenta encapsulation and tincturing offer a modern way to continue this lineage of reverence. Rather than discarding what was made by your body, you can choose to receive it. It’s a reclamation of inner wisdom—an act of trust, and of return.
